Will the USB Memory Stick Ultimately Be Superseded by the SD Card?

The SD card, with its optimal storage capacity derivatives, such as the SDXC, with its 2TB capacity, are pushing the frontiers of portable data storage ever forward. The fact that this thumbnail sized device is capable of containing more data than the average desk top computer was able to store back in the 1990's, means that its potential uses are vast. Currently used in conjunction with all manner of portable devices, such as media players, camcorders and digital stills cameras, GPS devices, video games consoles, tablet and netbook computers, as well as cell phones and ebook readers such as Kindle, the market for these miniature memory cards is vast. They are now supported by over 400 brands across the world, making it the de facto 'industry standard' memory card for the portable device market.

The USB memory stick differs greatly from the SD card. As it connects to host devices via a USB port the body of this format needs to be protected. SD cards are inserted into the host via a slot, and therefore need no protective encasing whilst in use. The USB memory stick needs permanent protection, making them significantly larger than SD cards.

Like SD cards, the USB flash memory stick is universally supported which means that it is compatible with every modern computer on the market. All computers now have at least one USB port. They are also as technically robust as they are physically strong. Many memory sticks allow one million write or erase cycles and have a ten year data retention span. This is an incredibly high spec for something that is increasingly seen to be a disposable commodity, and are thus being given away for free along with mugs, pens and coasters by corporate entities, replete with company logo's.

In short, their appeal is great. They are not as small as the SD card, but even the largest stick is no bigger than a slender pack of chewing gum, and many are a third of this size. These days they are manufactured as key fobs which means that they are much less likely to be lost. Attaching externally means that they are a lot less fiddly than SD cards, which are only easily inserted into hand held devices owing to the fact that users can maneuver the device and the card at the same time, marrying the two easily. Heavier devices would not permit such easy insertion and retrieval.

There are very distinct benefits to both formats, but due to the fact that a lot of hand held devices are now used in conjunction with computers there may be a considerable push for conformity in media across the board. If this were to happen it is likely that the SD card would win out as USB formats are unfeasible within portable products.

USB - How To Get The Most From This Rapidly Growing Technology

USB connectors are used by input devices (mice, keyboards, scanners, digital cameras), output devices (portable CD writers, printers), storage devices (external hard disk drives, flash or USB memory keys/sticks) and even decorations and novelty items such as mobile phone chargers, flashing light snowmen, coffee cup warmers and mini reading lights.

Let's take a look at some of the things to look for in the USB world.

Plugs and cables

Not all USB plugs are created equal. It's likely that your computer will accept 'type A' plugs, but the other end that plugs into your camera or printer may be a 'type B', a 'mini' or a 'micro' USB plug. Ensure that your cable has the correct plugs for your device on both ends. And if your USB cable seems a little short, you can buy extension cables but you may need a special 'booster' if you want to go over 5 metres or 15 feet.

Power

Devices can draw a low power current through a 5 volt supply to the USB connection; however this may not be sufficient for high powered devices like external hard drives. Multiple USB devices on one computer can experience performance problems and errors if their combined power requirement is too great. 'Powered hubs' are available which provide additional USB connections and an external power source, though some devices may still need their own power supply (e.g. printers).

Storage

After starting out with a capacity of 4 floppy disks, USB storage devices ('flash' drives or USB keys) can now hold over 4,000 times that amount, with capacities currently hitting 16 GB. Flash drive designs range from options like lanyard attachments to crystal studded drives that can be worn as jewellery. But if you are worried about transporting your important files on such a small, easily lost device, consider security features like encryption or a fingerprint reader.

Many MP3 players are now the size of a flash drive and provide song file storage through their USB connection, but also have special software installed to allow the song files to be played.

Speed

Like a traditional hard disk drive, flash drive performances can vary so if you are transferring large amounts of data you will want a fast read and write speed. A fast speed also allows you to use your flash drive as extra memory for Windows Vista, speeding up the performance of your PC when you need it. Readyboost won't work on slower performing flash drives.

Also, make sure your computer and all USB devices adhere to the more recent 'USB 2.0' standard, which has a faster transfer rate than the original 'USB 1.1' specification.

Learn About The Different Memory Cards

Everyday some new invention occurs in the field of computers. Because of these inventions, there are leaps and bounds of advancement in the computer world. This advancement is based on its advanced technologies and highly featured devices. Computers are aided with different scientific technologies that also enhance its performance.

A memory card is the solid state electronic data storage device in computers. Not only in computers, but it is found in almost all of the electronic computerized devices. These devices are mobile computers, digital cameras, music players, video game consoles and other electronics. Let us continue our discussions on different memory cards and some of the speeds of these cards.

When they are found in some devices they offer power free storage, record ability, and small form factor. The cards that are in solid state use flash memory and those cards that are in the non solid state do not use flash memory. Flash memory cards are replaceable for the hard disks in USB drive and MP3 player etc.

Different cards do different jobs and have different speeds. Some common areas of application are digital cameras, in cell phones and in game consoles. PC cards are a different type. They are the first commercial cards that came out in 1990s. They are used most extensively in the industrial applications. In 1990, more of the cards were invented but with smaller formats than the PC cards. They include smart media, miniature card and compact flash. At the onset of 2000, a number of memory cards were invented. These are Memory stick, SD/MMC and xD picture cards. Since then, the trend seemed to be that the smaller card was preferred over the larger cards.

As a result, compact cards are considered as outdated. PDAs and cell phones are made with ultra small memory cards. It is observed that compact flash and smart media are more successful in digital cameras. Most PCs have a number of built in things like compact flash, memory stick, SD etc. Most of the gadgets that are digital support a number of cards to ensure the compatibility of the gadget.

The speed varies among different memory cards. While buying one for your electronic gadget or buying an electronic device that has them, the speed factor is very essential. The speed actually determines the rate of speed of capturing a picture and the speed of transferring it into the computer. Thus the speed of your device depends on the speed of the cards. The SQ flash memory card is one of the different cards that leave all the others behind in speed. A 1 GB SQ flash card would increase the reading speed to the 24 MB and the writing speed to 12 MB. It shows a wide gulf of difference in the speed of other memory cards.

What Are the Different Types of Flash Drive?

When you are looking for flash drives that will suit your needs, you will find there are several points that you may need to think about. When you are getting a flash drive, you might find there are many different uses that you have for it. Keep in mind what you need to store and you will find that moving files on your flash drive is easy!

When you use a flash drive, you are taking advantage of a piece of non-volatile hardware that can be easily rewritten to allow you to move information back and forth quickly and easily. When you are looking for the right flash drive for you, take a look at the different types of device that you are looking for and how they can help you.

The first type of flash drive will contain single level cell memory. What this means is that it can sustain about 100,000 write cycles, meaning that you can erase and write over it 100,00 times. You will find that this can hold a great deal of information over time and that if you are looking for a device that will really go the distance, this could be exactly what you are looking for.

When you are looking at Multi Level Cell memory, you will find they can still withstand 100,000 write cycles. While this does seem significantly less than the specifications listed above, there is every reason to think that this drive will be more suitable for you. You will find these flash drives can hold more data at once and that occasional replacement might not be a huge problem if you can do most of your data transfers at once.

When you are looking at flash drives, they come in many different formats:

The first one that you may be most familiar with is a USB flash drive. A USB flash drive will let you plug the small drive directly into your computer and you will be able to access it as a drive on your computer. This will allow you to copy information to it as you need to and you will find that there are plenty of reasons to stop and take a look at your data needs to see what device will suit best.

When you are considering what kind of flash memory you need to invest into, you can stop and consider what you are transferring and how often. You will find that if you are transferring small amounts of data relatively frequently, your flash memory needs will be different from what you would need to do if you were going to be transferring large amounts of data at one time. Think about your environment and also think about your security needs.

At the end of the day, there is a different type of flash drive memory that will be able to help you with your data transfer no matter what your end goals are. Take a look around and make sure that you familiarize yourself with what is out there before you make your final purchase.

Routers Explained - Memory Types

BootROM

BootROM is used for permanently the storage of the startup diagnostic code (ROM Monitor). The main task for the BootROM is to perform some hardware diagnostics during bootup on the router, Power On Self Test (POST), and to load the Cisco IOS software from the Flash to the Memory.

Flash

Flash memory is a non-volatile memory storage that doesn't loose the information by turning the power off. Flash memories exist in many forms in routers, internal flash, external flash card or even USB flash cards.

Flash is used for permanent storage of a full Cisco IOS software image in compressed form. In Juniper routers Flash stores the JUNOS image and the configuration files.

Juniper router also has an internal hard drive that stores a backup copy of the JUNOS image, log files and any other required files.

RAM

RAM is a volatile data storage type of memory in which stored information is lost with power off. RAM stands for random access memory where the word random refers that stored data can be accessed in any order. RAM can be SRAM or DRAM. DRAM is used in more applications for the simplicity of its structure and lower cost.

RAM is used at run time for executable operating system code, and its subsystems, routing tables, caches, running configuration, packets, and so forth.

NVRAM

NVRAM stands for non-volatile random access memory and is used to describe any type of RAM that stored data is not lost by power turned off. NVRAM is used for writable permanent storage of the startup configuration in CISCO routers.

Computer Mouse As Mobile Memory Mouse

The computer mouse is the most essential accessory of the computer and the latest to hit the market is the mobile memory mouse which can actually store files and transfer them with the help of USB ports. Another interesting feature is the wireless technology because it has been fitted with 2.4GHz technology and the USB mini trans receiver. It has a rechargeable USB which has to be plugged into the computer even as one is working and it gets charged automatically. After use it has to be inserted back into the mouse because it works on battery charge. The battery life indicator glows in red when the battery is low. .

The modern age mouse is equipped with high definition laser technology which enhances performance, ensures smoother tracking and faster responses from the mouse. The cordless mouse has a maximum supporting operating distance of about 9metres and hence it is ideal for notebook users as it is easier to carry. The mouse now has five programmable buttons which adapts to the users needs thereby providing better service and comfort to the user. The optical technology makes the mouse pad redundant. Any flat surface is enough to make the mouse functional. Some of the latest additions to the market use the adaptable diamond eye technology which provides faster movement identification.

Keeping in mind the right hand bias, the mouse of today has been designed in such a way that both left handed and right handed users are comfortable using it. There is also the magnifier point and four way scrolling function. A special case has been provided for carrying the mouse. A bluetooth mode switch is also provided along with the switch button to turn it off or on. The cordless laser mouse offers a zoom wheel and runs on AA type batteries. The auto shut off option helps one to save on power.

The forwards and backwards button helps us to navigate the internet with ease. The scroll wheel is totally frictionless and this ensures that the computer mouse can literally fly through long documents smoothly and very fast. Some batteries run for 6months and others for 2 years. Unlike the optical mouse the new mouse can take any kind of surface to function very smoothly. Some have non slip side rails for better hold.

The gaming mouse is so swift and precise that the resolution is 1600dpi which is said to be twice the amount that is offered by the conventional mouse. There is also the tactile response design which is specially designed for the gaming experience. There are seven physical buttons integrated into it and they are all independently programmable. The new age mouse comes in attractive and eye catching colours and makes a classy new statement to the users' inventory of computer accessories.

Data Loss - Backing Up For the Inevitable

It is a fear that every individual who has toiled in front of a computer knows very well. After spending days, even weeks on a single project and finally finishing it (or so you thought), it suddenly disappears. Gone are the days of my dog ate my homework excuse, it has now morphed into my computer crashed and my files are all gone excuse. Be it the truth or a mere excuse for laziness, not being able to submit any output is everything but pleasant.

Data Loss: Inevitable

It happens to everyone. This is not isolated to a single nationality, race, or political affiliation. Even with this information, fact still remains that only a few individuals attempt to protect themselves from such threat. Most people fail to realize that the product of their blood and sweat (and sometimes tears), is represented in their hard drives by a few million ones and zeroes, which can easily vanish at any given time.

The Unending List of Excuses

The excuses that one can come up for not backing important computer files only show the depth and scope of his imagination. Among the variety of excuses, the frequent reason for not backing-up files is that the people simply do not have the time and patience to save and save their data yet again using another medium. It would seem that backing-up important data (in case something happens to the original document) is not really a choice one often makes.

But to be fair, there are those that would be more than wiling to back-up their files. But unfortunately, their financial standing dictates that an additional hard drive is not an option. Then there are the few who perceives such task as tedious and time consuming. In their point of view, manually copying hundreds, if not thousands, of files and data is but a waste of time. How can securing important data in an alternative location be a waste of time?

Simply put, there is not a single legitimate excuse for not backing-up computer files. Actually, one need not purchase expensive hard drive or flash drive for back-up purposes. The market sells flash drives amounting to less than twenty dollars and hard drives tagged below a hundred bucks.

Let us face it, we do not have much important files saved in our primary hard drive. And with this raised, opting for the basic flash drive will provide sufficient storage and security. Since there aren't a lot of files, weekly back-ups will not be time consuming. A few minutes to a couple of hours might be enough to manually copy valuable data.

External Hard drives

This is basically the same as that installed inside your CPU (central processing unit). This drive is usually linked to the computer through a USB (universal serial bus). And thanks to this arrangement, the user can effortlessly transfer files by dragging and dropping said data from one device into the computer and vice versa.

Pros & Cons

Pros: Most external hard drives are plug and play. You can just hook the drive in your desktop computer and the latter will detect the newly connected hardware on its own. As for the con, this device demands for a substantial amount of juice or electricity---a let down for all notebook owners. Some hard drives function solely with a plugged USB, while others depend on external power, usually a wall outlet.

Flash drives

This is a miniature hard drive, small enough to fit on a key holder. This works like a hard drive as well. You connect it thru the USB port and the computer will automatically detect the same. As for the memory capacity, it ranges from megabytes to gigabytes. This is portable hard drive at its finest.

Optical Drive

These are your CDs and DVDs. But with the current technology, the former appears to be vanishing in the market to make way for the more advanced DVD. An optical drive utilizes laser to interpret and inscribe data onto the disk. DVDs are convenient for its affordability and accessibility. Problem is, when the DVDs get scratched, it will render them useless.

Dell Inspiron 1525 Product Review

'One of the thinnest and lightest laptops available in the market, DELL Inspiron 1525 comes with a 15.4” inch screen and is considered to be the best bet for 'basic computing'. Yet it might not perform so well under heavy uni workload. The laptop comes with a much better battery life, better than even more powerful configurations available in the market. The range of processor configurations, are one of its unique features. Besides, it has the cool touch-sensitive media controls. Priced at 35,000 INR, the DELL Inspiron 1525 laptop model has its own set of unique features and pitfalls and as such is competing for its market share, amidst other laptop manufacturers in the same league. A quick overview of this DELL model is as enclosed:

The Feature Highlights:

Ease & Degree of Customization: The DELL Inspiron 1525 is a must have for those who believe in customizing almost everything, to better suit their need & tastes. The users have the flexibility of customizing the laptop, as per their likes if they are discontent with the default settings.

Good Performance: Inspiron 1525 comes bundled with solid performance and great features.

Design: The Inspiron 1525 scores high on its sleek keyboard design, the touchpad and the media buttons.

Pricing: In spite of added features, improved performance, elegant style and the ease of customization its offers, its very noiminally priced if we compare with the market Laptop Prices, for similar make, configuration and performance.

Product Pitfalls:

The Inspiron 1525 model scores less on dedicated graphics option. This very model can't handle 3D graphics. Instead it only supports 2D applications and simple games.

The laptop's glossy LCD lid works as a magnet for your finger prints, thus giving it an untidy look very frequently. We definitely don't seek that!

Limited display options as offered by this model, also add to the suite of product pitfalls.

Also, the wireless performnace has been reported as inconsistent.

Overall the product seems to score above average as compared to the other models, in the similar price band and competing for a pie of the laptop market. Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop is undoubtedly a performance driven, compact, economical and stylish laptop and gives a fair competition to other laptop brands in the same price range. Now, this is what we call a 'Smart Deal' to grab, if you just need the laptop for basic computing, web surfing and the likes. It surely serves your purpose efficiently, without even costing you a fortune. The detailed product specifications are as enclosed:

What is a Computer Flash Drive?

If you have been looking around at computer peripherals, looking for a way to move your data around, you will find that you have many options available to choose from.

One of which is known as a computer flash drive.

If you are in a professional situation where you want to move data from one computer to another, you might have already considered sending the information over to a shared wireless network, or of simply networking the two computers together, but you will find that taking a look and seeing the solutions that a computer flash drive can give you would be a far easier method of achieving this.

A computer flash drive is essentially a device that has flash memory on it and it usually has a USB interface that will allow this to connect to your computer. Once it has been connected, you will find that your computer will simply read it as another drive, a place to which you can copy information or take information away. With this in mind, you will find that you can put virtually any amount of information on your flash drive as long as you do not exceed the memory confines. This is a great deal of help when it comes to copying information from one computer to another.

When you are considering a computer flash drive, the first thing that you need to know is that it is non-volatile. What this means is the information that is stored on the drive will not need to be powered up in order to be maintained. A flash drive can simply sit as it is, with no power running to it and maintain your information in good condition. You will find that this is highly useful when it comes to preserving your data and making sure that you don't lose it in case of any problems occurring. When you want to make sure that your work is backed up in a place that is not reliant on your main source of power, a flash drive will be ideal.

When thinking about computer flash drive, you will find that you have several different sources available to you, a computer flash drive being one of them. These flash drives can be as small as a packet of chewing gum and when you are considering making sure that your data is safe and secure you will find that carrying it around with you may be an idea. This means that no matter where you are you will have access to the data that you need to work. This also means that you won't be dependent on an internet connection and that you will be able to operate independently on many other systems around you.

Take the time to think about what the purchase of a computer flash drive can mean to you. You will find that this is an important part of getting your work done and of keeping it safe in the event of an emergency, so take a look and find out what is going on when it comes to these handy devices.

Ecology And The Sharp Sf 6600 Printer And Compatible Toner - A Dependable Choice To Go Green In...

The Sharp SF 6600 Printer with Sharp printer toner cartridges is but one of the many printers available from Sharp. Sharp offers printers that have more then one function, printers using laser technology, and printers that use the older ink jet technology. The laser printers produce high-resolution printouts whether you are using the copier or printing function. Many of the multifunction machines are perfect for small businesses and offices.

Sharp printers use ink jet and digital laser technology depending on the printer. There are many features included with the Sharp printers including an automatic document feeding tray, a single increment zoom function, a bypass tray, and a photo exposure mode option. The machines can connect directly to a computer or to several computers through a network. The majority of the printers need a USB connection.

Besides having a combination of copying and printing Sharp also has machines that perform faxing and copying. The fax machines have options that let you forward faxes to e-mails without being charged any extra fee. You can also send a fax to multiply individuals and store your most used numbers. This is a great option if you need some faxing capabilities but don't have the room for multiple machines.

Sharp also offers machines that include printing, scanning and copying, all using the latest in digital laser technology. The memory of this type of machine is high to ensure that your documents are printed quickly. All of the multifunction machines from Sharp can use many different types of media, not just standard A4 plain paper.

All of the consumables needed for Sharp printers are environmentally friendly and use the newest and best technology to produce high quality printouts and copies. Many of the toner cartridges are compatible for several machines and carried by office supply companies around the world, including the Sharp SF 6600 Printer Cartridge. There are also several online stores that offer hard to find sharp consumables for older models.

Sharp continues to produce high quality ink jet printers as ink jet machine are still used for home and personal use. Ink jet printers are not as expensive as laser jet and while you will use more toner and ink cartridges these items are still much less expensive than what is needed for laser printers. The print quality of ink jet printers is not as good as laser. While the printouts are still good, the clarity and crispness lags behind laser products.

Sharp products focus specifically on equipment that fills the gap between business printers and home printers. They were made to make you more productive while keeping expenditures low. Sharp offers products for businesses, individuals, homes and families. You can feel safe when shipping your Sharp products as they have the highest security rating, ensuring that your products are safe.
